Gene Stollman, O.D. (Doctor of Optometry), F.A.A.O. (Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry), was a practicing clinical optometrist in Jerusalem from 1970. He inaugurated the Contact Clinics at Shaare Zedek Hospital in 1971, specializing in fitting infants with lenses following surgery of congenital cataracts. In 1981 Gene completed a course in Public Health and moved to Hadassah Hospital where he directed the Contact Lens Section as well as the Jerusalem Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. He also headed a government department for the Rehabilitation of the Partially Sighted. Working in these sections for the visually impaired encouraged him to find ways to ameliorate psychological and optical problems of people with "low vision". In 1995 he was appointed the first Department Head of the newly established Hadassah College of Optometry. After his retirement from Hadassah, Gene maintained a part time optometric practice in Jerusalem. Gene and Honey Stollman came to live in Israel from New Jersey in December 1969 with three young children. In December 2009 they moved from Jerusalem to Ramat Gan to be near their children and grandchildren.
